SIMONE BODMER-TURNER

Simone Bodmer-Turner Studio is a multidisciplinary practice creating furniture, lighting, decorative objects, and ceramics, as well as building site-specific installations for interiors. Our studio is based in Massachusetts and New York.

In 2018, after experimenting across many styles, glazes and techniques and completing multiple residencies in Japan, Mexico, and New York, Simone was prompted by an invitation to present a body of work and set about designing a cohesive family of vases that was intended to be collected over time, each member joining its siblings in a collection of complementary forms. At once curvaceous and neutral, modern and referential–evoking historic vase shapes used for both ceremony and function–every piece was imagined as one that could surface from any era. Dubbed the Permanent Collection, the interest in these vases from both independent collectors and high end retailers around the world made it possible for Simone to focus on her studio practice full time. This would eventually make it necessary to build a studio of her own, bring on a team of ceramicists, and transition from solo practitioner to small-scale manufacturer that turned her one-off vases into a line of editions. In 2020, the Permanent Collection grew to include the Bridge Handled Vessel and its family, a series of vases highlighting feminine bulbous bellies, twin necks, and negative center space that’s been particularly influential in contemporary studio ceramics. The collection was produced until 2023 when it went underground while the studio and its production capabilities made the transition to Massachusetts where it is settled as of 2024. Come 2025, several new collections and typologies will make their debut.
