Originally from the Netherlands, Marieje van Buuren is a visual artist working at the intersection of textile traditions and contemporary sculptural form. She holds a BA (Hons) from Central St Martins and an MA from the Royal College of Art in London. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with recent presentations in Amsterdam, Madrid, Brussels, and Palm Beach. She has an upcoming exhibition during Salone del Mobile in April 2025.
Van Buuren creates large-scale wall installations, free-hanging sculptures, and site-responsive works that engage the tension between structure and fluidity. Using sustainably sourced fibers, she weaves organic forms that evoke transformation—both material and human. Her work integrates found and repurposed textiles, shaped copper elements, and natural oxidation processes, creating surfaces rich in texture and history.
Her creative process begins with a color study in aquarelle on cotton rag paper, allowing her to explore tonal relationships before translating them into fiber-based compositions. Her work is part of private collections in Saint-Tropez, London, Spain, the Netherlands and the US and has been exhibited at venues including BIG ART in Amsterdam, Object Rotterdam and Onna House in Palm Beach. In addition to her studio practice, she is developing a series of sculptural pieces that incorporate handmade ceramic elements, expanding the tactile language of her fiber-based work.
“My practice is both meditative and reflective—I work in stillness, yet past and present surface in the process. By translating these thoughts into material form, I invite the viewer to find their own reflections within the work.”
