Katie Grove is an artist and educator whose passion is to inspire both viewers of her art and students in her classes to build a relationship with the plants growing around them. She teaches basketry from her studio in the beautiful Rondout Valley of New York State and enjoys a robust studio practice that merges traditional basketry techniques with sculpture. Katie holds a BFA in Printmaking from SUNY New Paltz and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the NOMAD program at the University of Hartford.

In her meticulous woven sculptures, installations, and drawings, Katie uses plant materials that she forages locally to examine the human relationship with nature. In her work, wood, bark, and grasses morph from raw material into carefully considered weavings in a single sculpture, inviting viewers to see the process of transformation firsthand. Human and plant bodies are intertwined in pieces that merge ceramic hearts and lungs with birch bark and rushes. In her newest work, she draws on the traditional basketry techniques and plant materials of her European ancestry, reinventing them in works that reference her own genealogical story while addressing broader themes, including the interwoven histories of plants and people.
