Carey Lowell is a ceramicist who sculpts clay into intricate mobiles and mandalas with historical and spiritual resonance. For over 20 years, she modeled and acted in film and television, including Sleepless in Seattle, License to Kill, and Law & Order. Ceramics started as a creative pursuit and developed into a full-blown passion. She works in her studio in upstate New York, where she focuses on hand building in porcelain. Lowell considers her ceramics a practice in mindfulness, sculpting clay into intricate mobiles and mandalas that reference historical and spiritual forms. Lowell was recently featured on Design Matters, Debbie Millman's podcast, and in Pier Paolo Pitacco’s 1000 Vases, about the most original ceramicists around the world.
"These hand-built porcelain paper clay mandalas are a physical reminder to stop, breathe and come into the present moment—for me and the viewer. Mandalas were used historically as a means to focus attention and aid in meditation. To imbue them with good will, I'll often repeat a metta meditation while I work: 'May you be happy. May you be free from suffering. May all your wishes for this lifetime be fulfilled.'”
Lowell was born in New York and raised in Libya, Holland, France, and Texas as a result of her father's work as a geologist. She was first introduced to clay at her public high school in Denver. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and transferred to NYU. She has a daughter and a son and lives in upstate New York.
